Public education

From the Democratic Party platform:  “Democrats know that every child, no matter who they are, how much their families earn, or where they live, should have access to a high-quality education, from preschool through high school and beyond.”

We support a Public Education Act that would provide federal funding for locally-controlled public schools, including community colleges, colleges and universities.

Our platform also states that:”Democrats are unified in their strong belief that every student should be able to go to college debt-free, and working families should not have to pay any tuition to go to public colleges and universities.”

“America’s College Promise Act of 2017” (H. R. 3709) has been introduced by Representative Bobby Scott (VA).  As of February 13, 2018, it had 6 cosponsors.

This bill would provide greater access to higher education for America’s students by making two years of community college free and maintaining State and Indian tribe support for higher education.

Our platform further states that “Democrats will allow those who currently have student debt to refinance their loans at the lowest rates possible.”  The lowest rate possible would be an interest-free loan, which could be offered by the federal government.  No legislation providing for such an option has been introduced in either house of Congress.
